Why would you not want to use a KMS? MAK keys make everything more difficult. Settings up a KMS is drop-dead easy and requires no additional infrastructure as most folks use existing DCs, DNS servers, or other existing infrastructure systems. Not using a KMS makes no sense honestly in almost all scenarios.

Usually when you get a MAK key it will tell you how many activations you have. You may have to keep an eye on it in case you run over that number. Once you have the KMS server setup, there is nothing you need to do. The OS will seek out a KMS server for activation and when found, will do everything automagically.
