The bad news is, you MUST set them. So far my experience of comms has been that on Win9X, each time you open the port it starts with a set of defaults (although I don't know what it defaults the XONXOFF settings to, certain settings /have/ been observed to default, so I assume they all do); but on Win2K and WinXP (and possibly WinNT also), settings are /retained/ from one program to another, even though the port is being re-opened - as I find out the hard way.
