Intrusion Detection System. Better is an
Intrusion Prevention System, it actively watches the network and stops bad
traffic before it comes to your server. An IDS tells you "you were broken
into" and sure enough when you check your server, it was broken into and
everything is trashed. IPS stops the attack before it is
successful.
I'm an Internet Security Consultant, this is the
type of work I do full time.
You are probably already familiar with snort, but
if not, that's a good start for IDS. www.snort.org
