Hi: A server was built and removed from the Domain. The server that was once built was called 'server x' and another server took its place called 'server y'.
The 'server x' DNS host entry was removed and an alias was placed for 'server x' to point to the new 'server y' host. There were Wins entries in the Wins DB on our domain for 'server x' and I removed them without issue however whenever someone tries to: \\server_x this machine returns an entry stating it cannot be found. Basically it is not pointing to the alias in DNS. Nslookup resolves the pointer (alias) and pinging either 'server x' or 'server y' resolves it to the correct server which is 'server y' I am actually wondering if there is some cached object or orphaned object somewhere that I cannot find. I run Win 2k nativly and Dynamic DNS. There are no entries in the AD or DNS services for 'server x' Any ideas anyone? I am wondering if this is the 'wait to Wins game out' yet the computer in the Network Neighborhood is no longer available and the server is powered down. I have also removed the aliases and host for server x and y from DNS and redone them too. Argh, Erik L.
