Sysprep is the only cloning tool Microsoft supports, and it can be automated. Although Ghost is a great cloning tool, SID walker is inferior to Sysprep. SID walker only changes the SID and computer name (if it's the same length). Sysprep can change the name, SID, join the domain, redetect all hardware and install the drivers, alter the video resolution, reconfigure the network settings, change the local admin password, set time zone, set regional and language settings, install printers, install additional software, and more. Any and all of these features can be enabled (and automated) with the settings file you provide. A tool to create the settings file is provided in the resource kit; it's called the Setup Manager, I think. We use a Ghost-type disc copying tool, but we always use Sysprep for Windows "cloning". We use one "image" for every computer at every location at our company. This would not be possible without Sysprep. Even if it wasn't the best tool, we'd use it because being able to contact Microsoft for desktop support is important to our clients. I agree sysprep is a good option, but you still have to do some manual settings and answer some prompts enter in the cd code, things like that. Also from what I have read ghost walker is much more thorough in updating SID information. 6 and 1/2 dozen. Depends on what you prefer, like James said though, enterprise edition doesn't even need to be walked. So already sysprep is obsolete. -----Original Message----- From: Mike Staines [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2001 9:25 AM To: MSWinNT Discussions Subject: RE: The best way.... I used Ghost extensively in my role out of new computers with NT 4.0. It was the best investment my company made. Worked like a charm, and I would use it again in a second. But I have a question. Instead of ghost walker, why not use the SYSPREP utility found with Windows 2000? I haven't used it in any great number since the shop I now work at is already 2000. It seems like a good idea, no need for ghostwalker since it creates a new SID, and you can set it to PlugNPlay when its first booted. I am relatively new to this group, so If I missed discussions about this app I apologize. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Ed Esgro Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2001 8:46 AM To: MSWinNT Discussions Subject: RE: The best way.... Ghost will work, but I would suggest taking at least one of the computers, rebuild it completely from scratch, make this computer your model computer. Install all apps, Service Packs, etc. Don't add it to the domain. Then ghost it. After you ghost all of the other computers, walk the SID on all of the machines and rename the computers, then fire them up and add them to the domain. Or you could fire them up and rename them in Windows. Ghost has a limitation with renaming computers. The character set has to be exactly the same. -----Original Message----- From: C.Rajagopalan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, December 11, 2001 1:45 AM To: MSWinNT Discussions Subject: The best way.... Hi ! We need to upgrade about 30 client machines in our Division having following config: Existing Config: 64 MB RAM, 4 GB HDD To be upgraded to: 256 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD Rest all, including the Apps, Users, etc. should remain the same in each machine. At the end of the upgradation, there will be only one 40 GB HDD in each. All clients currently run Win 2K SP2. Which is the best way to go about this upgradation, WITHOUT the full re-install of the OS ? Any case studies, experiences, pitfalls, software to accomplish this would be most useful. Thanks in advance.
