Depending on the type of cable modem...

Try powering down the cable modem and restarting it Then connect the win2k
machine directly to the modem and see if you get an address.  Make sure you
power down the CM.  I found that certain cable modems work off the MAC
address on the nic card it find when it boots up and will ignore all other
traffic.

Your cable modem will most likely only provide 1 IP address so... you will
need an addressible device between the modem and computers.  What kind of
"switch" is it?
