Yep, you nailed it. They are ALWAYS asking for more speed, even when a
brand new machine hits the building.
But, they are the reason you are in business. Your job is to keep them
going.
At our shop we also use the Compaq line of DeskPro 300 Workstations. They
are P4 1.7/Win2k/512-1gb/20gb pcs. Also, each developer has a laptop to
work side by side with their desktop. Most of the coding happens on the
desktop and e-mail and CIV are played on the laptops.
But they always ask for more, and we do our best to give it to them.

Hi everyone ,
I was wondering what kind of Hardware/Software configuration is used
normally for software developer's computers ?
We are a small company and have about 10 software developers (they think
they are the smartest and intelligent people around, huh !!!) . We have
given them P-4/1.5Ghz/Win2K/256Mb/SCSI 18Gb HDDwith Adaptec SCSI cards),
these are Compaq Workstations . Each of them have two 21" monitors
connected
to their computers. On top of Win2K they have McAfee virus scanner. They
bitch about having the virus scanner (say it slow their computers) and
demand more memory and isolation from company's main LAN .
So , I'm trying to figure out what is generally used out else where ? I'll
really appreciate any answers or pointing to some surveys conducted by
someone regarding this.
