We currently are investigating a SAN solution with a mirrored site using
snapview. However, we would still back up the mirrored site, too.

Have any of you ever considered solutions other than tapes?

We don't back up a total of 200 gig. That's just the size of the tapes.

It actually takes about 18 hours to back up everything which is
approximately 120 gigabytes.

I know that sounds long but it covers approximately 200 desktops (the
director, for some reason, doesn't want to use home directories for desktop
data; he wants it kept on each pc) which Veritas has to authenticate to.

It also covers our Exchange server, 4 SQL servers plus the main hospital
software (from Meditech) on 8 servers.

It is fast though; a lot better than we had before. For example, our
Exchange backup takes 15 minutes for 4.17 gigabytes.

I'm sure if we used home directories on one server we could cut that time by
20-30%.

How fast you can backup the size of 200GB?

We use Veritas Backup (v8.6) with an Exobyte drive using 200 (2-1
compression) gigabyte tapes.

What are people using for backups? Media and software?

I'm evaluating what to do about our current tape backup solution. For a mid
sized company we spend a lot of money on tapes. I'm wondering if there is
another solution that would be just as good with less disposable cost.
