Strange... Not every solution is explainable but as long as it works. Oh
well.

I did enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP
everything was cool until I uninstalled and reinstalled TCP/IP(on the XP
home machine) from there on it didn't want to talk to the other win98
machines through windows networking (pinging only) but when I went to the
other machines and reloaded their protocols XP was happy

riddle me that

it's like XP home was saying "my stack was reloaded, so reload theirs"
that's my technical exlanation.... I'm sticking to it :)

This is not correct. XP Home cannot join a domain, but it does allow
workgroup type access to network resources.

Luke, I'm not sure what the exact answer is, but if I remember
correctly, you have to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the XP machine to
access the shares on a 95/98 machine. (I could certainly be wrong)

Is it XP home edition? If so you can not use network resources with XP
home
edition, it doesn't support it. You have to get XP professional to do
that.
