would Little Brother/Surf Control track what you need? -----Original Message----- From: Tom Gilbert [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, June 22, 2002 10:32 AM To: MSWinNT Discussions Subject: Need Advice on Router and Control
I have a 40 user network and I used to have my DSL modem connect to an internet gateway, using a proxy program called WinGate. All users would connect to the internet via the proxy. When I used the proxy I could monitor the traffic and to some extents what Ports were being used FTP, HTTP, SMTP etc. I could see web addresses of sites being accessed. But sometimes the proxy crashed and everyone would lose internet access. I switched over to a DSL router and everyone now connects directly. It seems fine but there is a problem Now that it is direct I have no way of knowing of what the users are doing nor do I have any way to monitor traffic. The internet is supposed to be used for e-mail and large file transfers. We don't mind personal use but business is supposed to be first priority. But I know they are downloading MP3s and one is connecting to the internet radio. MP3 downloading was only allowed after hours and internet radio was considered a waste of bandwidth. I am concerned that bandwidth is not available for business priorities. I like the reliability of the direct connection but I need some monitoring capability and control. HELP - Any suggestions?
