Citrix Metaframe and NFuse are also options for the remote user. In this case you could potentially bypass the VPN solution by using a placing a NFuse server in a DMZ or behind the firewall. The Citrix encryption and firewall may be enough to satisfy you security needs. Also using a Citrix client with a VPN works well. Implement a roaming profile for the users, maybe include some GPOs and viola! Your users will have access to their applications anywhere, anytime and leverage their home equipment (like printers). It is an elegant solution and relatively painless.
