A joystick network is slow (I have worked with MSX-Connect over joystick
ports)...
Why not use a common PC-ISA Ne2000 networkcard (you can get them for free if
you are lucky) and connect it to the cartridge connector with a converter.
Then write a TCP-IP stack and you have a network!
As a bonus, you can use the internet too!
I think this would be great :-)
