Very short: JPEG compression uses a combination of throwing away
information and compacting what remains. Fast fourrier transformation
is used to filter out high frequencies in the image, which correspond
with sharp edges in your image. On digital photographs you won't notice
this (if the compression rate is well chosen) but on "synthetical" images
like yours, it has of course a distastrous effect.
