Any SCSI bus needs proper termination. One terminator at both end.
Without any terminator most controllers will not work at all, because the
hardware is designed to see the termination. For very short cables one
terminator will sometimes work, but it is not recommended at all.
The error you received is a clear indication of a missing terminator.

Tried without harddisk + cable? I hope there is a terminator on the Gouda
interface internally. I have not seen this one, on most controllers
terminators can be removed, they are 3?resitorpacks (single in line).
If all works without a powered diskdrive, are you sure the connector on the
hard drive is in the right position (i had it reversed once and than the
scsi bus is really terminated and down .. to ground)
