A little while ago I received my Metal Gear cartridge from the
Netherlands. When I put this in my Turbo R, I was a little disappointed
to see that there was totally no difference. Here in Japan, Metal Gear
is very expensive. The one and only copy I have seen had to cost about
8500 yen, about HFL 150,-. As I heard there is much difference between
the REAL Japanese story of Metal Gear and the translation of (probably)
Homesoft, I wanted to play the game in Japanese. But it didn't work.
What you say about Firebird and Parodius is actually quite remarkable.
When making these games, Konami had known from the beginning that they
wouldn't export it outside of Japan. Else, they should also have
developed European titles. Hadn't thought about that before. The name
'Firebird' shall also have been an unofficial European creation.
Firebird is the most literal translation of Hinotori. 'Hi' means 'Fire',
'Tori' means 'Bird' and the 'no' is a particle that connects these two
(but as this is a long story to explain in which nobody will be
interested I'm not going to explain this !). I guess a better
translation would have been something like 'The bird of fire'. But the
game is based on an anime, a friend told me a while ago. In the '70's
this anime was very famous, as he told me. Maybe if this anime has also
been translated it was called 'Firebird'. As the meaning actually is the
same. But I don't know the exact story, so I'll stop here.
