SID has really powerful programmable filters, complex interchannel
modulations (including ring) and different oscillator waveforms (including
variable width pulses) which yield a rich, dynamic sound.
Its design is sheer brilliant. Hence the Byte award.
Bear in mind it was designed in the VERY EARLY 80s, so comparing it against
a TR or whatever 90s computer has little sense.
