The same happened to me with the SVI 738 Xpress (1989 if i remember..)
The cause was a very badly designed audio circuit. The sounds are just added
to each other
( a simple mixer) with resistors, but they were very badly chosen.
Adding a resistor in the adding circuit solved it.
It did require some poking inside the motherboard after looking at the
schematics.

I have a slotexpander with in it a SCC cartridge and a FM-PAC (and some
more).
When I have this stuff on my NMS-8280, nothing strange it happening: SCC
sounds good, PSG sounds good and FM-PAC sounds good.
But now I have my HB-G900P back, and I heard some strange effects: now
the PSG sounds too loud in the FM-PAC music of e.g. Xak II! But when I
take out the SCC, it's a lot better. It's also better if I put the
FM-PAC in the normal slot 1 (instead of the expanded slot 2.1 of the
slotexpander).
What can be the cause of this? The volume of the FM-PAC is already set
to the loudest position...
