Well afaik there only is a network protocol 'between'
PPP and IP (however NCP's belong to PPP so it's not
really a seperate protocol). I think -actually I'm
quite sure- that's the IPCP you're talking about.

There IS another layer between the modem and the PPP,
it is called HDLC and it really sucks.
