It needs an Outlook address book to spread, but it can make a mess of any
Windows computer that does VB Scripting...

Microsoft programs are used to spread viruses because they are widely
available. But a macro virus could be written for any system: it depends
on the security of the program that executes the macro, not the security of
the OS or the mail program.
A virus doesn't need root/administrator privileges to cause damage. User
privileges are enough: users can modify their own files (damage) and
communicate through the net (spread). And with a smart disguise many users
can be tricked into opening an infected document.
