The X could never stand for Philips coze they joined under Matshushita...

It think that the official meaning is boring MicroSoft eXtended, they did
this to make MS happy and because MSX uses the extended version of MS
basic...
As you know, ASCII was Microsoft Japan...
But to keep the japanese happy they also called it Matshushita, Sony and
Others (X).  See it as the unofficial internal project name.
And what about spectravideo? Maybe the S refers to them?
