somewhat less than half, I'm afraid :-(  The reason for all this angst
is to allow developer workstations to be pulled from (so that any dev
can pull from any other).  Without reliable ssh server access on dev
stations, this is not easy.

the full cygwin stack does work fine.  After installing it, I had to
run "ssh-host-config" and answer some questions, mostly "yes", (and it
needed admin access) but that was all.
