I realise that re-translation (ie English-to-French-to-English) is not a
fair method to assess machine translation quality, but I was using it to
illustrate that MT is not infallible, especially in the 'richer'
languages, such as English, where words may have over 20 different
meanings dependent on usage within a sentence. AS you say, it multiplies
the errors on each pass, but there must be errors in the translation
process in thr first instance, for them to be multiplied.
Where human translators are involved, an 'off-line' discussion will (in
most cases) resolve the differences, whilst in MT, there is usually a
single pass at the transtation.
