I am compiling what I hope will be a fairly comprehensive timeline on
language technology since the appearance of computers.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions as to 'firsts' in a field that
covers not only machine translation, but NLP and speech processing
products, projects, services, teaching programs, publications, citations in
the press, etc. as a whole.

Much useful information, of course, comes from John Hutchins' essential
history of MT, but I'm also thinking of such candidate milestones as:
- first time MT was mentioned in a newspaper
- first university courses on NLP in various countries
- first PhDs on various language technology related topics
- first marketed grammar checker
- etc etc

Any contributions will be most welcome
