MT developers are invited to inspect a new website describing the linguistic
underpinnings of OpenLogos:
http://logossystemsarchives.homestead.com/
The site was developed by Bud Scott, the Chief Architect of Logos (OpenLogos)
MT System and it presents legacy information about the Logos Model that
underlies OpenLogos, the open-source MT system downloadable from DFKI at:
http://logos-os.dfki.de/
Of particular interest is the availability on this site of the SAL taxonomy,
the internal representation language of OpenLogos. SAL stands for
Semanto-syntactic Abstraction Language, and may be thought of as a second-order
natural language, since NL text is re-expressed as SAL text at the outset of
internal processing. SAL has about one thousand objects (words) covering all
parts of speech, making it roughly two orders of magnitude richer than pure
syntax, and two orders of magnitude leaner than first order NL. The website
provides descriptions and illustrations of SAL, together with motivation (e.g.,
using abstraction to manage NL complexity) and use (e.g. effecting syntactic
and semantic disambiguation).
