Applications from excellent candidates wishing to conduct research in any of the areas in which ILLC is active are now invited.

The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation currently has two four-year PhD positions available at the Faculty of Humanities (FGw) and one at the Faculty of Science (FNWI) all starting September 2011. Applications from excellent candidates wishing to conduct research in any of the areas in which ILLC is active are now invited.

Research at ILLC

The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation is a research institute of the University of Amsterdam, in which researchers from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities collaborate. Its central research area is the study of fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of information. Research at ILLC is interdisciplinary, and aims at bringing together insights from various disciplines concerned with information and information processing, such as logic, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence and philosophy. Research is organized in three research groups: Logic and Computation (LoCo), Logic and Language (LoLa) and Language and Computation (LaCo). Tasks

  • Complete and defend a PhD thesis within the official appointment duration (see text below).
  • Regularly present intermediate research results at international workshops and conferences, and publish them in proceedings and journals
  • Collaborate with the researchers in relevant other parts of ILLC
  • Participate in the organization of research activities and events at ILLC, such as conferences, workshops and joint publications
  • Assist in teaching activities of ILLC (depending on your appointment)

Requirements

  • A Master's degree with excellent grades in a relevant field, such as logic, computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy or cognitive science
  • Good academic writing and presentation skills
  • Good social and organizational skills

Appointment

The two PhD candidates at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam will be appointed for 4 years for 80% or for 3.3 years fulltime under the terms of employment currently valid for the Faculty. A contract will be given in the first instance for one year, with an extension for the following years on the basis of a positive evaluation of, amongst other things, a written piece of work.

The PhD candidate at the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam will be appointed for 4 years fulltime under de terms of the employment currently valid for the Faculty. A contract will be given in the first instance for 1.5 years, with an extension for the following 2.5 years on the basis of a positive evaluation.

The salary for all 3 positions (on a full time base) will be € 2042 during the first year (gross per month) and will reach € 2612 during the fourth year, in accordance with the CAO for Dutch universities.

Application

The application procedures for the 2 positions at the Faculty of Humanities differ from the one at the Faculty of Science. Faculty of Humanities
Applicants for one of the PhD positions at this Faculty are required to send in a PhD proposal that will either fit within the research done in the Logic and Language group or in the Language and Computation group. The proposal should follow the guidelines described in the documents below.

You can apply for one of the PhD positions by submitting your original and well formulated project proposal before February 1st, 2011, 1 p.m. (CET). With the proposal you should also submit a CV, a list of grades of your Bachelor and Master (or equivalent) programmes, a letter of motivation, and the names of two academic referees with contact information. Please also include a writing sample (such as your MSc thesis or a term paper), preferably a link to an online version.

Faculty of Science
Applications for the PhD position at this Faculty should include a letter of motivation, a CV, a list of grades of your Bachelor and Master (or equivalent) programmes, and the names and contact details of two academic referees. Please also include a writing sample (such as your MSc thesis or a term paper), preferably a link to an online version. The letter of motivation should outline what kind of research you wish to undertake and why you believe the Faculty of Science part of ILLC is the right environment for your PhD studies. This part of ILLC contains the Logic and Computation group and the Language and Computation group.

You are welcome to contact an appropriate member of the senior scientific staff at ILLC to discuss your plans ahead of applying formally.
