Dear MT-listers

Thank you very much for all answers I got on the subject of MT and
copyright issues.
Here comes an abstract of them:

Christine Bruckner pointed me to the book „Machine Translation - What
Language Professionals Need to Know“, editor J. Porsiel (see
https://www.bdue-fachverlag.de/detail_book/128), which has a chapter
“Übersetzen mit Software, wer ist der Urheber”. (To translate with
software, who is the author)

Stephen Richardson, president AMTA and IAMT, mentioned "in the MT systems
I’m familiar with (MS, Google, etc.) there’s almost always a statement in
the terms of use that they do not own the rights to any content produced by
their systems."

Michelle Vanni suggested contacting translator societies, such as the
American Translator Association, Jost Zetzsche’s group, among others, as
well as peruse their annual meetings for contributions on these matters.

Finally, Joss Moorkens pointed me to his book chapter written with Dave
Lewis, (http://doras.dcu.ie/23974/) and specifically to the "Bird and Bird
report from 2014, commissioned by the EU, in which Troussel and Debussche
opine that MT output ‘would not be protected under copyright given that it
leaves no room for human creativity and would therefore be deprived of
originality’.", which id available from
https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/e079e290-e250-482d-9d4f-dae566ba67ff

To all of you my warmest thanks
Diana
