The major difficulty is that this issue is intermittent; i can't
reproduce it reliably. Sometimes exiting and restarting mu4e fixes the
issue, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes existing and restarting Emacs
itself fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the issue
spontaneously disappears of its own accord, and doesn't reappear for
days or even weeks at a time. So the problem comes and goes in a way
that makes it difficult to narrow down possible causes, including
personal settings.

Can you suggest any particular settings that might be contributing?
Stepping through the code that eventually causes the error hasn't given
me any hints as to what, if anything, in my config might be creating the
issue.

i track the git version of mu/mu4e, rebuilding and reinstalling it every
few days on average. The main menu of mu4e reports the version as
"0.9.9.6pre2 C".

i'm currently running the git version of Emacs, rebuilding and
reinstalling every few days also; the value of `emacs-version` is
currently "24.4.50.11". But this mu4e issue has been happening for at
least a few months now, and has occurred with a locally compiled build
of 24.3.

This is all on 32-bit Debian Wheezy.
