It looks like Apple requires you to be part of the developer program
($99/year) to obtain a certificate it will recognise (which is free once
you pay the developer fees). I'm not keen on forking out money on this.

Status in Mudlet the MUD client:

Bug description:
  Mac Mudlet needs to be signed, otherwise it complains of 'Unknown
  Developer' and doesn't run when it is double-clicked either - you have
  to right-click and open. Generally, an inconvenience Apple has
  introduced to get people to sign their apps.
