In code it is mpMapper->show() in TConsole::createMapper that causes it
to happen:

** Description changed:

Just doing createMapper(0,0,300,300) causes all of the toolbar buttons
  background to turn permanently black.
-
- On OSX 10.8, they'll also all go completely white - moving mouse over
- them will cause them to re-show with the black background.
-
- Ons OXS 10.10, they'll all just have a black background.
