BURNLEY MADE US WORK - FERGUSON

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson picked up a special bonus at Turf Moor - a
bottle of red wine from Stan Ternent. The Burnley boss was in gracious mood despite
seeing his side go down 2-0 in the Worthington Cup.

Ternent joked: "It's an expensive bottle of wine on my wages." Goals from Diego Forlan
and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer steered United into the quarter-finals.

But Ternent was delighted with the way his side went about their business. He said:
"The team have done the whole football club proud. Manchester United are an
exceptional team. "It was an enjoyable experience apart from the result and a learning
experience. "That's the standard we have to try and attain. "There are a lot of things
we can learn from the game. It was a good open game, and in the second half we tried
to get a bit more width out of our team."

Ferguson's team were too good, though, and Ternent added: "United are clinical, and
the finish from Solskjaer was straight out of the top drawer. "As long as we learn
from this match it will have been a good night. I think we have given the fans
something to enjoy. "United have very good players. Whatever side they put out it will
be a good side, as we saw tonight."

Ferguson admitted his side were been made to work hard for their victory. "I thought
we showed a lot of resolution and fight against a team that gives everything," he
said. "We had to work hard. They were a bit unlucky and made it a real cup tie. "I
sensed in the second half we were getting more penetration and creating chances. It
kept them stretched a bit, and doing that I didn't worry as much as the first half.
"It was a competent performance. We had to battle but we did that well tonight."

Centre-half Wes Brown added on Sky Sports 2: "We knew it was going to be tough and we
would have to grind it out and get the win. "They are playing at home, so it was
always going to be difficult. We had a lot of young players but we got together and
played how we know we can and got the win."

United face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday in a vital Barclaycard Premiership
game, and Brown added: "Saturday is a big game - everyone is looking forward to it.
"We've had a few good wins in the league and we hope we can continue." Forlan, who
added to his two goals against Liverpool last Saturday, said: "It's nice to score. We
came here to play well and win - and we did it. "We watched some videos and knew they
play well and we had all the respect for them."
