Well, it was to be expected today. Portsmouth fans were on a day out
at the home of a world famous club and determined to enjoy it. They
didn't need any motivating to sing but, from the United point of
view, it was harder to get excited about playing "Portsmouth".

That said, you'd think there'd be some fans among the 60,000 reds
who'd fancy giving a bit of vocal support. The truth is that the home
support at OT is not much different from the home support at Anfield,
Highbury or anywhere else but we are now sterotyped as the prawn
sandwich brigade and that isn't going to go away any time soon no
matter what our away support does.

A bit sad really when you consider the contribution made by the
Stretford End and Scoreboard End before the seating arrived. As Becks
pointed out yesterday, United got the second goal against Sunderland
because the fans were shouting encouragement. Having equalised, the
noise drove the team forward for the winner. That kind of support can
be worth a goal to the home team. But the social make-up of Old
Trafford and the embarrassment (I suppose) of being seated rather
than standing make it hard for people to lose their inhibitions to
shout and scream for the team.

Maybe being drunk should be made a condition of entering Old
Trafford? I'll drink to that.
