There's an article in the Grauniad today which provides a lot of
background. It would seem that the Manchester City directors thought
along the same lines as you Al Tel. Despite him passing a fitness
test, they were suspicious and wanted to restructure the fee to
include part based on appearances. Fowler took this an an insult and
bailed out. Apparently he liked Keegan but was not impressed with the
directors. There's a lot of info about Leeds' financial situation
too. Much like Robbie himself, it's not pretty. 77m in the hole and
they need to make some big payments (15m or so) smartish. The Man
City directors have not only upset Fowler, they've messed up Leeds
too because now Robinson, Woodgate and Smith are reported to be
available and everyone knows that Leeds are in a parlous state and
the buyers have the upper hand.

P.S. Ethel - congrats on the victory over the corporate monsters.
