I'm a lifelong fan (well, since I was 5) but have the unfortunate disadvantage (in this only) of being Australian. Before this year, I had only attended one Manchester United game (during the Oz tour a few years ago). I've come over to Europe for a couple of years and set up shop in the UK, looking forward to being a "real fan" for at least one year of my life. Well, thus far I've made it to one game, away at Southhampton, sitting in the home season ticket holders section, thanks to my Soton supporting flatmate. I loved every minute but it's just not the same (I assume). I couldn't get membership for this year, because they've closed memberships. And unfortunately my finances don't stretch to the ridiculous sums that touts ask for. And to rub it in, there have been more United games live on Australian TV than there have been here.
But I agree with you that it's all those non-fans that are stopping both people like you and me from getting to games. I just hope our sacrifice is earning the plc a fortune. All I can hope is that I'll have no problem getting membership for next season. If I do, I won't be concerned about missing 5 games.
