UNITED TRAVEL WITH WEAKENED SQUAD Ryan Giggs was one of the few experienced players called upon for Manchester United’s Champions League trip to Deportivo La Coruna today. With qualification for the quarter-finals already assured, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson opted to rest several of his key first team players, including David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Fabien Barthez and Rio Ferdinand, as he focused on a title charge which was given added impetus by Arsenal’s defeat at Blackburn on Saturday. Scottish Under-21 international Darren Fletcher, who impressed during last week’s 1-1 draw with Basle, was among the travelling party and is likely to be given another opportunity against the Spaniards, who are already out of the competition. Giggs, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, John O’Shea, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Laurent Blanc were the only big-name players to file through Manchester Airport this morning. “Darren Fletcher did it last week so maybe a few others will get a chance tomorrow,” said young full-back Danny Pugh, who could be in line for his first Champions League start. “We have to make a good impression in every game whether it be in the reserves or the first team. We are approaching this match just the same as we would any other Champions League game. We want three points.” PROVISIONAL SQUAD: Carroll, Ricardo, O’Shea, Blanc, May, Pugh, Lynch, Roche, Webber, Fletcher, Richardson, Stewart, P Neville, Nardiello, Butt, Solskjaer, Giggs, Forlan, Davis. www.sport.scotsman.com http://www.red11.org/news ------------------------ Yahoo!
