Hi Allo, There was an article in an Oz medical newspaper a couple of months ago, which analysed elite athletes and supported a theory that they are born and success is due largely to genetic make up. It discussed Lance Armstrong, Becks, Michael Schumacher Don Bradman and Ian Thorpe. I have edited to remove references to Posh and lifestyle issues (and the other sporstmen).
The difference between you and me and David Beckham is comparable to the difference between an old PC with 5 inch floppy discs and a supercomputer. The English soccer superstar is considered one of the best in the world at scoring goals from a free-kick. A recent analysis at the University of Sheffield's sport science laboratory in the UK found that Beckham computes in less than a minute what it takes their computers two hours to calculate. Beckham's two most outstanding abilities are "chunking" information and expert decision making. Chunking information is all about efficiency in processing data. "I've seen ballet dancers do it when they listen to 100 choreography instructions for the first time and then execute them perfectly" says Gavin Freeman senior psychologist at the Australian Institute of Sport. "They collect the instructions into chunks and then roll them out one by one. Beckham is exceptional at doing the same for each new free-kick situation". Expert decision making involves a storing and retrieving the chunked information in four stages. The first stage is walking back for the free-kick and taking in information from the environment, such as wind direction, position of the goalie and defensive wall, Freeman says. The next stages include assessing the alternatives, making a final selection and visualising it in his mind. Stage four is taking it without letting thousands of spectators distract him from the task. Beckham's free-kicks have been described as "alchemy". They could also be described as "electricity".
