Sunday, July 27, 2003 Forlan jolts Club America with double Ruud van Nistelrooy's goal trail stopped off at the LA Coliseum as he set Manchester United on their way to victory over Club America of Mexico.
The prolific striker, a scorer 80 times already in just two seasons since his 18.5million move from PSV Eindhoven, was branded priceless by United chief executive Peter Kenyon yesterday. And, after his superb goal in the win over Celtic on Tuesday, Van Nistelrooy was on target again as the Red Devils turned on the power after a tepid first-half to blitz their startled opponents. Once again Van Nistelrooy's effort was pure class. Turning onto a Diego Forlan flick-on, the Holland international's first touch took him away from the last defender before he unleashed a devastating drive from the edge of the box which Adolfo Rios had no chance of keeping out. With his two goals Forlan at least proved there is some back-up available should Van Nistelrooy ever need a rest. After the brilliance against Celtic in Seattle on Tuesday, the opening half of the second game of United's two-week US tour was a big let-down. Against a team more at home in the Los Angeles heat, Sir Alex Ferguson was always likely to play a waiting game, content to allow Juan Sebastian Veron to pull the strings from midfield. The trouble was Club America were happy to adopt the same approach, which meant that by the end of the first 45 minutes, there had been only one meaningful save, Rios racing from his goal to deny Forlan after Veron had carved out the space for his fellow South American. All that changed in a lightning start to the second half, when Van Nistelrooy's value to the United side was emphasised once again. Forlan, involved in a minor scuffle with Jose Mendoza, headed the second after good work down the left flank from Quinton Fortune. And there was still more to come from Forlan, who took 27 games to break his Red Devils scoring duck, as he raced onto Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's flick-on from a long punt downfield from Ricardo and lashed home United's third. America grabbed a late consolation when Christian Patino finished neatly after being sent through by Oviedo. Fergie satisfied with work-out United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased with the performance of his side following a tepid opening period. 'It got a bit competitive, which is a good thing, there's no problem with that,' he told MUTV. 'Unfortunately we got a couple of bookings but overall it was played in a good atmosphere and the crowd was terrific. 'The Mexicans are very competitive people and they are very passionate about the game and I think that showed today. 'The welcome in Los Angeles has been fantastic. I think with the Mexican influence here you get a more passionate and football-minded partisan crowd.' 'It would have been interesting to see if Club America had scored first and made us chase the game. The atmosphere would have been electric then.' Two-goal Forlan was similarly happy as he added: 'I have been a substitute many times since I have been with United but all you can do is wait for your chance and then take it. Hopefully that is what I have done tonight.' Champions League runners-up Juventus are next up for United at Giants Stadium in New Jersey on Thursday, followed by a Philadelphia showdown with Barcelona on Sunday. 'It should be terrific on Thursday,' said Ferguson. 'Juventus and ourselves know each other so well and Marcello Lippi and I have faced each other so many times. 'I'm looking forward to it and it should be a terrific game. I've been to Giants Stadium before, it's a great atmosphere in there.' ** For great Emap magazine subscription & gift offers visit http://www.emapmagazines.co.uk ** -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this email is intended only for the addressee(s) named above.
