UNITED TELL BLUES TO UP THEIR OFFER MANCHESTER United have told Chelsea that their opening bid for Seba Veron is not good enough. The cash-laden Stamford Bridge club tabled an offer in midweek that is believed to be 15m. But the Reds, who bought the Argentinian for 29m two years ago, won't be doing any business for the midfielder unless Chelsea return with a substantial increase. The Veron transfer remains in the pending tray at Old Trafford. It still appears that United would encourage talks at the right price but don't want to leave their squad numbers for the new season short. If Chelsea want the 28-year-old South American in Claudio Ranieri's squad for the start of the Champions League campaign then they'll have to act quickly because Wednesday is the deadline day for the qualifying round. Change of heart - United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's stance on Veron has weakened during the Reds' tour of the USA. At the outset he was predicting that the player would still be at Old Trafford at the start of the Premiership season. That altered to, "We would like him to stay but things may change." Last night Fergie said after United's 3-1 final match success against Barcelona when asked if Veron would be staying at the club, "I can't answer that." However, he poured cold water on Veron's absence from United's starting line up against the Spaniards. "You can't read anything into that," he said in Philadelphia. "We have a quota of midfield players who need a number of games. It was Roy Keane's second full game, Paul Scholes has played two, Seba has had two and now Nicky Butt has had two matches. Left out - "I wanted to spread the load around and that is why I played the team I did. There is absolutely nothing whatsoever concerning Seba Veron in terms of him being left out of the team." Veron's future could still ultimately be decided by United moving into the transfer market. The player looked set to move when United thought they were going to be successful in their pursuit of Ronaldinho and the arrival of another midfielder would push Veron closer to the exit door. www.manchesteronline.co.uk http://www.red11.org/news ------------------------ Yahoo!
