Wolves started to close us down from the edge of our own penalty area.
Under those circumstances, a defender can either clear with a
hoof-and-hope long ball or, better, he makes a shorter, easier pass to
someone in midfield so we can keep possession and pass our way
forwards. The trouble with trying the second route yesterday was that,
if you have only defensive midfielders, the build-up will be slow. If
you have someone like Scholes there (or, dare I say it, Veron) then
the midfield build-up will be much faster and we can outpace the
retreating opposition and make chances for the front men.

So yesterday, we were held up on the edge of the penalty area and
then, if we didn't make the useless long ball but played through
midfield, we we found that our buildup was so slow that all the Saints
were back in their own half and holding us up yet again. Thank God not
all sides are as hardworking as Southampton (and Wolves, and Bolton
for the first hour ... er?)

Veron "might" have been a help yesterday in the absence of Scholesie
(though his pace and passing weren't always reliable. The fact is, and
we all recognise it, we need Paul Scholes and now have no backup for
him at all.

I suggested putting Diego (maybe even Giggs) alongside Keane in
midfield to see if we can find that creative midfield spark we lacked
yesterday. It could be worth a go against Charlton but against
Arsenal, if Scholesie is still out, we'll need someone to play out of
their skin like last year's unsung heroes. Phil Neville, your moment
has arrived (again). :-O
