RUUD van Nistelrooy squared up to fiery Holland international colleague Edgar Davids on the training pitch.
But the Dutch camp is playing the incident down as they focus on Wednesday's trip to the Czech Republic for a vital Euro 2004 qualifier. The Manchester United striker was involved in a confrontation with Juventus midfielder Davids, described as a "chest to chest incident" by coach Dick Advocaat. The Dutch squad has been plagued by internal strife in recent years - in December Davids was involved in a dressing-room bust-up with PSV Eindhoven's Marc van Bommel after a friendly game against Argentina. But the latest clash, ahead of Holland's 3-0 win over Austria, has been down-played by both Advocaat and Davids. "I have the best players on the continent," explained Advocaat, "but they are not willing to accept things from each other. "Davids has a different personality but his aggression is important for the team. I have told him off for what he has done wrong but I will not leave him out. Why should I?" Davids described the incident as "one of those things in football" and Dutch observers are putting his behaviour down to the fact that he is locked in a stalemate with Juve over his contract. Van Nistelrooy is expected to return for the game against the Czechs, with whom the Dutch share top spot in the group, after completing a one-game ban for picking up two yellow cards.
