WENGER IN 'CHEATING' OUTBURST

The ferocious personal enmity between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger erupted in
dramatic style last night as both managers blamed each others' players for the
sending-off of Patrick Vieira and the subsequent fracas at the end. Wenger accused
Ruud van Nistelrooy of "cheating" to get Vieira sent off after the Dutch striker, who
committed the first foul, indicated that he had been struck by the Arsenal
midfielder's foot - although television replays showed no contact was made.

"I thought Van Nistelrooy did not help," Wenger said. "He's a great player but his
attitude means that he is always looking to provoke or dive. He looks like a nice boy
but on the pitch he does not always behave fairly. "I think that if Patrick deserved
to go off then, after the first foul by Van Nistelrooy - he deserved to go off too.
Patrick is 100 per cent sure that Van Nistelrooy caught him and I saw it from the
bench, we saw that Van Nistelrooy went for him. Yes, I think it is cheating."

Wenger's TV attack on Van Nistelrooy was heard by Ferguson who was furious at the
accusations levelled against his player. "I'm not here to talk about Arsenal's
discipline record - it is Arsenal's job to resolve it," Ferguson said. "As far as I am
concerned I can defend Van Nistelrooy. "I have heard Arsene Wenger's comments and I am
really disappointed. Ruud committed a foul on Patrick - there were many through the
game and some from Patrick himself. Ruud tried to get out of the way and he has looked
over at the referee as if to say 'What kind of behaviour is this?' The referee has had
no option."

Vieira said: "I'm really angry with Ruud van Nistelrooy not the referee. He made more
of the challenge than he should have and he cheated. He tried to stamp on me."
Ferguson described the violence at the end of the game, when Martin Keown, Lauren and
Ray Parlour all lashed out at van Nistelrooy, as "terrible." Wenger said: "If you want
to see Martin Keown as a devil and Van Nistelrooy as an angel you have a big problem
because Van Nistelrooy is quite provocative and every Arsenal player will confirm
that."
