Wenger hails Arsenal 'spirit' Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has praised the club's 'togetherness and fighting spirit' while restating his belief that his team's disciplinary record has been exaggerated by media hype. The Football Association hit the Gunners with 12 misconduct charges in the wake of the ugly scenes at the end of the 0-0 draw at Manchester United two weeks ago. But Wenger insisted at yesterday's Highbury AGM: 'We are not a dirty team and I don't think we should allow ourselves to get caught up in the hype and allow people to drag us down to a level we do not belong.' In comments quoted by today's Sun newspaper, he added: 'This club has always had a culture of togetherness and fighting spirit. 'There is a special bond here and the fans and the shareholders can be proud of us for that. 'In fact, when the players don't show those fighting qualities on the pitch I feel deep in shock because we have betrayed the backbone and spirit of this club. 'When I first arrived, I tried to identify our strengths and combine them with more attacking, offensive football.' Wenger admitted Arsenal can take action to improve their disciplinary record. He added: 'I don't deny that, sometimes, we do have excessive reactions which need to be kept in control. 'I confess we can do things in a clumsy way. But that is because I push the players to keep the spirit and to keep fighting.' 'Players complain they are often targeted by opponents who want to upset them and spark a reaction. 'I agree we do have to be correct in the way we behave and we can certainly improve by not reacting to bad tackling.'
