This is probably much less than an ideal solution, but hopefully it'll help those more familiar with the codebase come up with a cleaner solution.
I am not familiar with the irmc plugin, but shouldnt that be writen with poll/select to check if it is possible to write to the socket?

So I've looked more into the code, and it appears there is appropriate polling logic there.
I'm doing various debugging things including making the pl2303's buffer size smaller. The only thing so far that has worked is adding a sleep() after the write.
If I find the problem, I'll let you know.
