This protocol was named GroupDAV [1], server implementations exist within ZideStore, the OpenGroupware.org integration server, client implementations exist within Novell's Evolution and KDE's Kontact. I believe it would be a great enhancement if there was a multisync plugin that could speak the GroupDAV protocol.
