The remote plugin has been replaced by the SyncML plugin - the SyncML plugin is capable of syncing with itself over a network.
The HOWTO is in the process of being updated for the 0.80 release so it isn't reflected there yet, but this is mentioned in the 0.80 release notes on the website.
