If you're into Python, you might want to evaluate wxWidgets for the GUI (which works with Python, C++ and a number of other languages). The Python port (wxPython) is the (unofficial) de-facto GUI standard for Python (the official still being Tcl/Tk). Also, unlike other toolkits like QT, wxWidgets uses the native widgets on each platform. Actually, on Linux it targets GTK, on Windows it uses the native controls, and on Mac it uses Cocoa (?) and so on. The problem I see with QT is that most of the distris seem to be moving to GTK/Gnome in the long-term, and many new projects (closed-source and otherwise) use GTK (or a meta-toolkit like wxWidgets) over QT because of the licensing.
