----------------------------------------------------------- From: AjaySingala[Synergetics] Message 3 in Discussion Jayandra, Web Service is as we term it "making the Web programmable", to take the info beyond the browser and making it available to the end-user on his/her PC, locally. Web service is like an interface to an existing Web site, to extract specific information, without the Web service having to worry about how to render the data. The rendering of the data returned by the Web service is left to the end-user. Also, since we are talking about getting info over the Web, Web service works only over HTTP and uses SOAP for info exchange. This is useful when you need to access/provide info across platforms, and you do not know what language/platform etc. wil lthe end-use use to access the data. Because it goes over HTTP. On the other hand, if there is info that is strictly restricted within an enterprise network and will never be accessed outside of the company, it is better to go for .NET Remoting as it can also go over TCP (it can also go over HTTP). But, since TCP is definitely way faster than HTTP, Remoting is a good option. Also, in Remoting you can use combinations like TCP-Binary formatter or HTTP-SOAP formatter. You can also cross these and go for TCP-SOAP or HTTP-Binary. Although, not a good thing to do, it's available. In short, Web service is for the Internet and .NET Remoting is for the Intranet. Also, Remoting objects can be hosted on IIS too making it available over the Web and allowing to provide more security features. Also, another thing that you can implement very well in Remoting is "callbacks". Since, in the case of a Web service, you have to keep "polling" the Web service for info, it cannot "call back" a client. But in Remoting, you can implement "callbacks" and make the server send a notification to the client. Hope this helps.
