----------------------------------------------------------- From: Vinil Message 2 in Discussion Anjali, Seems you have a choice to make, is it? Ok, some pointers then. Is .NET is language agnostic? Yes, it is. But as you have just experienced, it can both be a boon as well as a bane, atleast in the initial stages of the project, when you need to decide upon your development language. People will sway or try to sway one way or the other, depending on their prejudices regarding the languages. Those coming from a semi-colon background prefer C#. Those coming from a case-insensitive, type unsafe, everything is a variant background tend to lean towards VB.NET. As you must be aware, eventually all code that the CLR executes is MSIL. So, ideally one should be programming in MSIL, and believe me that's really fun! Anyway, whatever language you write your code in is immaterial. Atleast that's what the books and the propaganda makes us believe. But in a real scenario, its worthy of a discussion. When there are deadlines to meet, schedules to be stuck to, efforts to be estimated, a programmer with java,c,c++ background can't assume that it will take him the same amount of time/effort/energy to re-factor/code in VB.NET (even if he/she has had say VB experience.) This might appear to be a contrived example, but I have seen this happen! I am assuming (based on ur post) that you come from an ASP/VB/VBScript background. For you, it might seem that VB.NET is a logical next step. Yes, in a way. But from a larger perspective, what is the preferred language for your team? What about the maintenance group? Would they be comfortable maintaining VB.NET? You must be aware that VB.NET is syntactically a lot different that VB6 (or earlier.) Certain things are easier done in C#, certain other things in VB.NET. Optional parameters are a given in VB and VB.NET, C# balks at that. Thats an issue when using Office PIAs. In any case, its not a decision thats taken based on the language features, because there aren't much differences for regular programming from the language perspective.
