Some steps for project development: 1) Understand the requirements thoroughly. THIS
IS MOST IMPORTANT!! If this step is not properly followed then there's no point in
going ahead. 2) Get it cleared between all parties that requirements once frozen will
not be changed till the frozen requirements have been implemented. Not doing so is the
major cause of project failures. 3) If needed, repeat step 1 till everyone is in sync.
4) Choose any development platform, tools, software, etc., and strictly stick to it.
5) Do a thorough requirements analysis to come up with the design of the project which
consists of smaller parts or modules. These modules can then be assigned to individual
developers for implementation. Also have a test plan, if possible. 6) Properly
determine the development time, scheduling and deadlines using the requirements
analysis results and the difficulty levels various design modules of the project. Add
adequate buffer time to it (to ensure that no one is overworked, to ensure enough time
for testing, bug-fixing, etc., and to take care of unavailability of developers during
the project development time) before committing to the clients. This is very
important. Once you agree upon a deadline, try not to miss it by more than 10-20%.
Don't take any deadline just to impress the client. The smaller the deadline, the
happier the client will be - only initially. But once the product is shabbily made
just to meet the deadline, even meeting the deadline will not save you from losing
credibility. 7) Once everything has been planned, have some documentation for it.
Include the requirements, schedules & design in the documentation (a project plan).
The schedule document can be as simple as defining by what time different aspects of
the project are to be met. Most important among the documents are the requirements and
the design. These form the critical parts of the project plan, and try to stick to the
plan as far as possible. Deviating from it will surely result in missed deadlines
and/or overtimes. These are the very basic things that must be done in order to
increase your chances of successfully executing the project. In addition, it would be
helpful to have a defined or structured communication method between you and the
client so that the client does not go berserk with the requirements/changes/deadlines,
etc. Hope this helps.
