Past 2 months this is the 3rd personal mail i got from usergroup members including MUG
asking me that do we have server side cursors supported in .NET. I bet they are all VB
guys, migrating to .NET..

Well so i thought instead of replying them , i will write a small note to share this
info with all.

Stateful server-side cursors in ADO allows a recordset direct access to changes made
by other users or applications; it also enable pessimistic locking , hence apps. must
maintain long-lived database connections because stateful server-side cursors require
them. This severely limits the application's scalability, and can be a particularly
bad choice for Internet server applications.

There are no updateable cursors ANYWHERE in .NET for that matter. Stateful server-side
cursors aren't supported, so the programming model encourages short connection
lifetimes. The way .NET handles data is you push it into a dataset. The dataset keeps
track of the changes that are made, and then you pass the data set back to a data
adapter, which will fire off the appropriate insert, update, and delete statements in
order to update the underlying data source.

All of the data access in .NET is based on a disconnected data model.

Hope this helps....
