This is a possible explanation, but not necessarily correct: When you call A.staticVariableCopiedFromB, internally, the variables of B get initialised first (since B appears on the LHS in the assignment in class A). At this point A.staticVariable is not yet initialised (it is null), and hence in B when you say staticVariableCopiedFromA = A.staticVariable (null or empty string as of now), staticVariableCopiedFromA contains an empty string.
